What is CA articleship?

CA articleship is the practical training that ICAI requires a chartered accountancy student to complete under a practising chartered accountant, called the principal, before qualifying. The student works on real client files as an articled assistant while continuing the course.

Articleship is where most students first meet real GST returns, income tax returns, company registrations, ROC filings and audits. ICAI sets the rules on eligibility, duration, registration and leave, and changes them from time to time, so read the current rules on the ICAI Board of Studies (BOS) portal rather than relying on older blog posts.

How do I find CA articleship in Delhi?

Start with the official channel, then add direct approaches to firms you would like to work with.

1. Check your eligibility on the ICAI BOS portal. Confirm that you meet the current conditions to begin articleship and note the registration steps and forms ICAI asks for.
2. Search ICAI's listings. ICAI publishes articleship openings and practising members through its own portals. Search by city for Delhi, and use ICAI CA Connect to see CA firms by location.
3. Shortlist firms by the work you want. Decide whether you want audit-heavy exposure, tax and GST work, or company law and start-up work, and pick firms that do that.
4. Apply with a short CV. Send a one-page CV with your exam status, marks, software skills and preferred start month, and follow up by phone after a few days.
5. Complete registration with ICAI. Once a principal accepts you, complete the articleship registration with ICAI within the time it allows, using the portal.

What should I look for in an articleship firm?

• Type of work. Ask what share of the firm's work is audit, direct tax, GST, company law and advisory. A mix gives broader exposure.
• Client base. Firms serving traders, manufacturers and start-ups give different experience from firms serving large companies.
• Who will train you. Ask how many articled assistants each CA supervises and how work is reviewed.
• Study leave and exam support. Ask how the firm handles exam leave within ICAI's rules.
• Location and travel. Long daily commutes eat into study time. Firms near a metro station, such as those around Netaji Subhash Place, help.
• Stipend. ICAI prescribes a minimum stipend; check the current figure on the BOS portal and ask the firm what it pays.

How do I apply for articleship with a listed CA firm?

Of the three firms on CA in Delhi, only Khubchandani & Co. Chartered Accountants is a chartered accountant firm, so it is the listed firm that can take articled assistants. Greenwolf Advisors and Moneymji are not CA firms and cannot act as your principal for articleship.

• Audit assignments, under the supervision of the signing CA.
