1. What is a GST Return?
A return is a document containing details of income which a taxpayer is required to file with the tax administrative authorities. This is used by tax authorities to calculate tax liability.
Under GST, a registered dealer has to file GST returns that includes:
- Purchases
- Sales
- Output GST (On sales)
- Input tax credit (GST paid on purchases)
To file GST return , GST compliant sales and purchase invoices are required. GST compliant invoices must be generated as per GST rules, including proper tax breakup, GSTIN details, and HSN/SAC reporting (where applicable).
2. Who Has to File GST Returns ?

3. Types of GST Returns

4. Late Fees & Interest
If GST returns are not filed within due date:
Interest:
18% per annum on outstanding tax amount (calculated from due date till payment date).
Late Fees (for GSTR-3B & GSTR-1):
- โน50 per day (โน25 CGST + โน25 SGST)
- โน20 per day (Nil return)
- Maximum late fee varies based on turnover category (as notified by GST portal).
No late fee on IGST portion.
5. QRMP Scheme
Businesses with aggregate turnover up to โน5 crore can opt for the Quarterly Return Monthly Payment (QRMP) scheme.
Under QRMP:
- GSTR-1 is filed quarterly
- GSTR-3B is filed quarterly
- Tax payment is made monthly (via PMT-06)
This scheme reduces compliance burden for small businesses.
6. E-Invoicing Requirement
E-invoicing is mandatory for businesses exceeding the prescribed turnover limit (as notified by GST authorities). Eligible taxpayers must generate Invoice Reference Number (IRN) through the Invoice Registration Portal (IRP).
Failure to generate e-invoice where applicable may result in invalid invoice and penalties.
